Steam Iron & Humidifier Water FAQ

Why does my humidifier leave white dust?

White dust is tap-water minerals. Ultrasonic humidifiers spray tiny droplets, and when they dry the minerals settle on furniture and screens. The EPA suggests lower-mineral water. See our humidifier water guide.

Can I use deionized water in my steam iron?

Usually, yes. Check your manual: Philips recommends demineralized water or a 50/50 tap mix in hard-water areas, and Rowenta also suggests a 50/50 mix. Low-mineral water reduces scale and brown spitting. Read what water to use in a steam iron.

Why is my iron spitting brown water?

Brown spitting usually comes from mineral scale and residue inside the iron. Descale it following the maker’s directions, then fill with low-mineral water such as Renew Labs Steam Iron & Garment Steamer Water to slow new buildup. More fixes are in our steam iron guide.

Does humidifier water replace cleaning?

No. Low-mineral water reduces scale and white dust, but the EPA still advises emptying, drying and cleaning humidifier tanks regularly. Follow your humidifier maker’s cleaning schedule. See our humidifier guide.

Which size should I buy?

Keep a 1 liter bottle by the ironing board, or choose a 1 gallon jug, 2-pack or 4 gallon case for humidifiers that run all winter. Cases lower the price per gallon.
