What water is best for soap making?
Mineral-free water. Tap-water minerals can react with lye and oils, which may lead to soap scum, dullness or spots. Makers use deionized water for consistent batches. See our soap making water guide.
Can I use tap water to make soap?
Some makers do, but results vary with your water’s hardness and iron content. Deionized water removes that variable, so a recipe behaves the same every time. Learn more in our soap and cosmetics guide.
Do I add lye to water or water to lye?
Always add lye to water, slowly, never water to lye, in a ventilated area while wearing goggles and gloves. Adding water to lye can cause a violent reaction.
Do homemade lotions need a preservative?
Yes. Any product that contains water can grow mold and microbes, even when made with deionized water. Use a broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative at the supplier’s rate. Details are in our DIY cosmetics guide.
