LC-MS Testing Services
LC-MS testing pairs liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. The chromatograph separates a sample, and the mass spectrometer weighs each compound as it comes off the column. Renew Lab Group runs LC-MS in Houston, Texas to confirm the identity of pharmaceutical products, investigate unknown peaks and measure compounds at levels too low for UV-based HPLC.
What is LC-MS?
LC-MS stands for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. As in HPLC, a pump pushes the dissolved sample through a column that separates its components. Instead of (or as well as) a UV detector, the column feeds an ion source that gives the molecules an electric charge. The mass spectrometer then sorts those ions by their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). The output shows when each compound eluted and what mass it has.
In LC-MS/MS, a first mass analyzer selects a specific “precursor” ion, a collision cell breaks it into fragments, and a second analyzer measures those “product” ions. Matching the retention time plus specific fragment transitions gives highly selective identification. That is why LC-MS/MS is widely used for drug confirmation in clinical and forensic toxicology (Maurer, PubMed; PMC review).
What does LC-MS test for?
| Application | What LC-MS adds | Example question |
|---|---|---|
| Identity confirmation | Confirms the molecular mass (and, with MS/MS, the fragments) of the labeled compound | Is this really the compound on the label? |
| Unknown peak investigation | Gives a mass for a peak that UV can’t explain, which narrows down what it is | What is the extra peak in my HPLC chromatogram? |
| Trace-level quantitation | Much higher sensitivity and selectivity than UV detection | Is there a low-level impurity or contaminant? |
| Compounds with weak UV absorbance | Detects molecules that are hard to see with a UV detector | Can you measure an ingredient that doesn’t absorb UV well? |
| Toxicology confirmation | Selective confirmation of drugs and metabolites in clinical specimens (see toxicology testing) | Confirming a screening result |

LC-MS vs HPLC at a glance
| HPLC (UV) | LC-MS / LC-MS/MS | |
|---|---|---|
| Detects by | UV light absorbance | Molecular mass (and fragments) |
| Best for | Potency vs label claim, routine purity | Identity confirmation, unknowns, trace levels |
| Identity specificity | Retention time vs reference standard | Retention time + mass (+ fragment ions) |
| Sensitivity | Good for main components | Typically far more sensitive |
| Relative cost and time | Lower | Higher |
Many projects use both: HPLC for the potency number and LC-MS to confirm identity or chase down an impurity. The full comparison is in our HPLC vs LC-MS guide. For metals and elemental impurities, we use ICP-MS instead; see all HPLC lab testing services.

LC-MS terms, explained
- m/z (mass-to-charge ratio): what the mass spectrometer actually measures. For singly charged ions, it equals the ion’s mass.
- ESI / APCI: electrospray ionization and atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization, the two most common ways of charging molecules as they leave the column.
- Precursor and product ions: in LC-MS/MS, the selected starting ion and the fragments it breaks into.
- MRM (multiple reaction monitoring): a targeted LC-MS/MS mode that watches specific precursor-to-product transitions for each compound. It is highly selective and sensitive.
- LOD / LOQ: limit of detection and limit of quantitation, the lowest amount a method can reliably detect or measure.
- Matrix effect: when other components in a sample boost or suppress the signal. Good method development controls for it.
What your LC-MS report includes
Reports list the sample details, the method, the reference standard (where one is used), the observed mass or transitions, retention time and the result: identity confirmed or not confirmed, and the measured amount for quantitative tests.
Frequently asked questions
What does LC-MS stand for?
LC-MS stands for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Liquid chromatography separates the compounds in a sample, and the mass spectrometer identifies them by measuring their mass-to-charge ratio.
What is LC-MS/MS?
LC-MS/MS uses two mass analyzers in a row. The first selects a specific ion, it is broken into fragments, and the second measures the fragments. That fragment pattern is a highly selective fingerprint, which is why LC-MS/MS is used for confirmation testing.
When should I choose LC-MS instead of HPLC?
Choose LC-MS when you need to confirm what a compound is by its mass, identify an unknown peak, measure something at very low levels, or test a compound that is hard to see with UV detection. For routine potency against a label claim, HPLC is usually enough.
Is LC-MS more accurate than HPLC?
LC-MS is more specific and more sensitive, but not automatically more accurate for every question. For measuring the main active ingredient against its label, a validated HPLC-UV method is accurate and more economical. The right method depends on the question.
How much does LC-MS testing cost?
Pricing depends on the assay and the number of samples. For current pricing and a quote, call 936-379-5515 or email info@renewlabgroup.com.
How long does LC-MS testing take?
Turnaround depends on the assay and whether a method already exists for your compound. Projects that need a new method take longer. We give you the timeline when we quote; for current turnaround, call 936-379-5515 or email info@renewlabgroup.com.
