What Water to Use in a Steam Iron (and Why Your Iron Spits Brown Water)
Check your iron’s manual first, because makers disagree. Many steam irons are designed for plain tap water. In hard-water areas, brands like Rowenta and De’Longhi recommend mixing tap water 50/50 with demineralized (deionized) or distilled water, while Philips says distilled or demineralized water can be used to slow scale build-up. Never put scented water, dryer water, rainwater or descaling chemicals in the tank. Garment steamers and steam mops often benefit most from low-mineral water.
What do steam iron manufacturers say?
| Brand | Official guidance (summary) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Philips | Designed for tap water, but in hard-water areas distilled or demineralized water is recommended to prolong life; 50% demineralized mixed with tap is also fine. No perfumed water, dryer water, vinegar, starch or descalers in the tank. | Philips |
| Rowenta | Designed for untreated tap water. If water is very hard, mix 50% tap and 50% distilled. Do not use pure distilled or pure demineralized water, scented water, rainwater, or boiled, filtered or bottled water. | Rowenta |
| De’Longhi | Use tap water. In very hard water, dilute demineralized (unscented) water 50/50 with tap. No scented water, essences, descaling solutions or rainwater. | De’Longhi |
Why would a maker say not to use 100% demineralized water? Some irons are tuned so a small amount of mineral content helps the steam chamber behave predictably. In those models, fully demineralized water can change steam performance or release existing deposits as stains. That’s why the 50/50 blend is the common recommendation. You still cut scale roughly in half without changing how the iron was designed to work.
Why hard water is a problem for irons
Every time water turns to steam, its dissolved minerals stay behind. In a steam iron, that residue becomes scale on the heating chamber and in the steam vents. The USGS classifies water above 120 mg/L hardness (as calcium carbonate) as hard and above 180 mg/L as very hard (USGS). Many U.S. cities, including much of Texas, are in those ranges. You can look up your city’s water quality report or test it with an inexpensive hardness strip or TDS meter.
Why is my iron spitting brown water?
- Mineral scale breaking loose: flakes of scale cook and discolor, then spit out of the vents.
- Additives in the tank: scented water, starch or fabric fresheners in the reservoir can caramelize at soleplate temperatures.
- Residue from fabrics: starch and sizing build up on the soleplate and transfer as brown marks.
- Iron set too cool for steam: water doesn’t fully vaporize and drips out with whatever residue is inside.
Fix it: use your iron’s self-clean or anti-calc function as the manual describes, clean the soleplate when it’s cool, empty the tank after each use, and switch to a lower-mineral water (or a 50/50 mix) going forward.
Which water for which appliance?
| Appliance | Typical recommendation | Where deionized water fits |
|---|---|---|
| Standard steam iron | Tap water; 50/50 tap/demineralized in hard-water areas (check manual) | Mix 50/50 with tap to cut scale |
| Steam generator / steam station | Varies; many have anti-calc cartridges or rinse systems (check manual) | Mixing, or straight if the manual allows demineralized water |
| Handheld or standing garment steamer | Often low-mineral water to prevent clogging (check manual) | Straight, if allowed |
| Steam mop / steam cleaner | Often low-mineral water (check manual) | Straight, if allowed |
| Travel iron | Same as standard irons | Small 1 L bottle is easy to pack and mix |
How to mix a 50/50 iron water
- Find a clean, dedicated pitcher or bottle. Don’t reuse containers that held cleaners or scents.
- Fill halfway with cold tap water, then top off with deionized water. A 1 liter bottle makes about 2 liters of 50/50 blend.
- Pour into the cold, unplugged iron up to the MAX line.
- Empty the tank after ironing and store the iron as your manual directs.
Distilled or deionized for a steam iron?
For irons, both are “demineralized” water and both work wherever a manual calls for distilled or demineralized water, or for mixing 50/50. Deionized water is made by ion exchange instead of boiling, and it’s the more common choice for spot-free and steam uses. Either way, use plain, unscented water.
Scented ironing water: where it goes
Philips specifically recommends against putting perfumed water in the tank. To scent clothes, it suggests spraying scented water on after ironing or steaming (Philips). That’s how we recommend using Renew Labs Linen Water in Lavender and Fresh Linen: mist onto fabric before or after pressing. Unscented Linen & Ironing Water is plain deionized water and can go in the tank or the 50/50 mix wherever your manual allows demineralized water. Learn how to make your own linen water.

Frequently asked questions
Should you use distilled water in a steam iron?
Check your manual. Many irons are designed for tap water, and makers such as Rowenta and De’Longhi recommend a 50/50 mix of tap and distilled or demineralized water in hard-water areas rather than 100% distilled. Philips says distilled or demineralized water can be used to slow scale.
Can I use deionized water in my iron?
Yes, where your manual calls for demineralized or distilled water, or mixed 50/50 with tap water. Deionized water is demineralized water. If your manual says not to use pure demineralized water, use the 50/50 mix.
Why is my iron spitting brown water?
Usually because mineral scale or residue from additives like starch or scented water has built up and is cooking inside the iron. Run the self-clean or anti-calc cycle, clean the soleplate and switch to lower-mineral water or a 50/50 mix.
Can I put scented water or linen water in my iron?
Most makers, including Philips, say not to put perfumed water in the tank. Mist scented linen water onto fabric before or after ironing instead. Unscented deionized water can go in the tank where your manual allows.
Is filtered or bottled water OK for a steam iron?
Not necessarily. Pitcher filters and most bottled waters don’t remove dissolved minerals, and Rowenta specifically lists filtered and bottled water among the types not to use. Use tap water, a 50/50 tap/demineralized mix, or what your manual specifies.
What water should I use in a garment steamer?
Follow the manual. Many garment steamers clog with scale from hard water, so low-mineral water such as deionized water is a common recommendation.
How do I know if my water is hard?
Check your city’s annual water quality report or test with a hardness strip or TDS meter. The USGS classifies water over 120 mg/L hardness as hard and over 180 mg/L as very hard.
